In advance of the Martin Luther King Holiday, Philadelphia area leaders are set to announce plans today to join a 40-day effort to reduce violence in the city.

The project, which pays tribute to King's vision of a "beloved community," will enlist 40 or more agencies and institutions. The aim is to reduce violence through a collaboration of medical, vocational, mentoring and research programs.

The project is being led by U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah and former Philadelphia Mayor W. Wilson Goode. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is also participating.

The news conference announcing the project is set for this morning at the Colket Atrium of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, South 34th Street and Civic Center Boulevard.
