Trial date set for Fort Dix five

Attorneys believe the five men accused of plotting a jihadist attack on Fort Dix could come to trial by early fall.

Attorneys believe the five men accused of plotting a jihadist attack on Fort Dix could come to trial by early fall.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert B. Kugler this morning set a preliminary date for jury selection for the week of Sept. 29. Kugler has pushed for a speedy trial in the high-profile case, which has been delayed several times because of its complexity and size.

Defense attorneys expect to file a flurry of motions within 60 days to challenge the indictment and the searches of their clients' homes, and to throw out their statements to investigators.

They also plan to ask to move the trial from Camden because of the publicity surrounding the case.

The men also pleaded not guilty this morning to charges in a new indictment filed this week, which added three new counts.

Prosecutors said the men, who all lived or had ties to South Jersey, planned to use a pizza-delivery pass to get on to the Army base and open fire on soldiers.
