A Kingsessing man was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for shooting and killing a man two years ago outside a University City nightspot.
The Philadelphia Common Pleas Court jury deliberated 21/2 days before finding Corey Gaynor guilty in the April 2014 killing of Timothy Cary outside the Copabanana at 40th and Spruce Streets.
Judge Lillian Ransom immediately sentenced Gaynor, 28, to the mandatory life in prison without parole. Gaynor did not testify in his defense, and did not speak before he was sentenced.
University of Pennsylvania police responded around 1:30 a.m. to a report of a person with a gun inside the nightclub. Police found Cary, 31, of West Philadelphia, on the sidewalk outside, shot in the head, chest, a leg, and both hands.
Assistant District Attorney Gail Fairman said the investigation never revealed what led to the shooting. Fairman said Cary went to the club with a girlfriend and apparently got into an argument with Gaynor.
Fairman said Gaynor left the club, got a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol from his car, and returned and shot Cary to death. Gaynor was arrested at 41st and Pine Streets, Fairman said, and police found the gun on the ground less than a block away.
Gaynor was identified by several people, including Cary's girlfriend, as the man who fled and tossed the pistol, although defense attorney W. Fred Harrison Jr. argued that it was mistaken identity.
