The fifth and final suspect has been apprehended in a 2014 abduction and execution-style killing in Crescentville, police say.
Deforest Johnson, 29, was taken into custody Tuesday night in Newark, N.J., in the April 17, 2014, slaying of 29-year-old Carl Johnson and wounding of a 26-year-old man.
Deforest Johnson, who is not related to the slain man, was being held Wednesday morning at the Essex County Correctional Facility, according to jail records.
Police say Deforest Johnson and three men charged last week, along with another who has been in custody since September 2014, abducted the two victims, bound their heads and hands with duct tape, shot them several times and dumped them on Newtown Avenue near Godfrey Avenue.
Carl Johnson, who was shot in his face, back and leg, died at the scene. The other man survived shots to his back and forearm.
The motive was a robbery, police said.
Charged in the case last week were 29-year-old Christopher Corley, 27-year-old Brandon McKelvey and 27-year-old Nysare Oneil O. Alston.
Ken Thomas, 25, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and other charges in January. He had been scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday, but the hearing was postponed because of the pending cases against the other defendants, court records show.
