Resurfacing work on the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76- at University Avenue is back on the schedule for this weekend.

That means traffic in both directions will be reduced to one lane in the area from 8 tonight until 9 Sunday morning, weather permitting, PennDOT says.

And with no rain in the forecast, it looks like the weather will indeed cooperate.

PennDOT says this will be the last weekend for the work to resurface the adjoining nine-span and 16-span bridges carrying the expressway over the Schuylkill River, CSX railroad tracks, Grays Ferry Avenue and 34th Street.

As part of the $24 million project, crews are removing one inch of old concrete pavement and placing a new 1 ¼ -inch concrete overlay on the roadway.

The concrete resurfacing is coupled with the installation of new expansion dams that are supposed make the bridge decks water tight and extend the life of the decks for 25 years.

The bridges date from the 1950s.
