A Bucks County student is in critical condition this afternoon after being struck by a car driven by a middle school principal, police said.

The 15-year-old sophomore was just across the street from Pennridge High School about 6:45 a.m. when he stepped off the curb and into the path of a SUV driven by Margaret Kantes, the Pennridge North Middle School principal, police said.

Kantes stopped her vehicle at 5th Street and Campus Drive and rendered aid to the boy until paramedics arrived, said Chief David Mettin of the Pennridge Regional Police Department.

Soon after a helicopter picked up the boy and flew him with serious head injuries to Lehigh Valley Medical Center, Kantes called police.

"Dr. Kantes gave us a quick call and said it was her that had hit him," Mettin said.

Mettin said it was dark at the time of the accident and the boy was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

"She just didn't see him," Mettin said.

No criminal charges have been filed, Mettin said.

Kantes was undergoing routine toxicology tests at Grand View Hospital, said schools spokesman Joe Ferry.

Ferry said the boy lives in a nearby development and walks to school everyday.

Investigators have impounded Kantes SUV to inspect it for possible evidence, Mettin said.

Initial reports had indicated that the boy had been struck by a hit-and-run driver or a school bus.
