A 19-year-old woman and two daughters - one eight months old, the other 3 years old - died in a morning fire in Delaware City, New Castle County.
Shortly before 6 a.m., firefighters rushed to the 100 block of Clinton Street, where heavy flames were coming from the rear of an end rowhouse, according to Dave Carpenter Jr., spokesman for the Delaware City Fire Co.
Firefighters managed to get to the third floor and remove the mother and girls.
Their hearts had stopped so attempts to resuscitate were begun and continued as the three were rushed to Christiana Hospital, but their lives could not be saved, said Richard Crett, assistant chief with New Castle County paramedics.
Most of the fire was at the back on the first and second floors, Carpenter said.
The residents of the adjacent home were evacuated, because its attic also was damaged by fire.
The cause of the fire, which was brought under control at 6:45, is under investigation, Carpenter said.
Clinton is a main street in Delaware City, which sits along the Delaware River in southern New Castle County.
