New Hope borough has banned smoking in restaurants and bars. Effective in 30 days, the ordinance also bans smoking within 20 feet of the entrance to a bar or restaurant and in any borough-owned facility, with exceptions for sidewalk cafes, outdoor service areas and private clubs.

"It's past time," said Richard Hirschfield, president of the Borough Council and a former smoker. He noted that no restaurant or bar owners spoke against the ordinance, and the vote Wednesday to approve it was unanimous.

"I've waited 25 years for this," Police Cpl. Frank DeLuca said. "I used to dread going in for calls at the bars."

Jorge Armenteros, president of A Little Taste of Cuba, a cigar store, opposed the ordinance, saying business owners should "have a right to choose what legal activities go on in their premises." - AP
