READING - The school board has refused to overrule the Muhlenberg Elementary Center's decision to cancel its Halloween parade this year.
Angry parents took a petition with 600 signatures to the board meeting Wednesday, but district officials said construction work next to the center made it impossible to let children carry on the tradition of wearing costumes and parading around the grounds. The school will hold a fall festival instead.
Superintendent Theresa Haught told the parents: "We are not trying to take away Halloween. We are trying to keep your children safe."
But a letter to parents also said costumes were becoming increasingly gory and inappropriate, and too expensive for some children, and called the Halloween celebrations a distraction. - AP
