State board OKs school districts' voluntary merger

HARRISBURG - The State Board of Education yesterday unanimously approved the first voluntary merger of two Pennsylvania school districts.

The state's blessing will allow the Center Area and Monaca School Districts to complete their planned consolidation by July 1. School board members in the districts northwest of Pittsburgh approved the merger earlier this year.

Local school officials have said the merger is needed because enrollments are shrinking, making it more difficult to provide more than basic educational programs.
