Alan Su, who took over Sagami Japanese restaurant in Collingswood, plans to open another location in University City.

It’s set to take over Stephen Starr’s former Pod restaurant, which closed last year after almost 25 years. Su hopes to welcome diners by next summer.

Su told The Inquirer he plans to bring traditional Japanese finishes into the space and have a sushi counter that might become one of the largest in Philadelphia, with as many as eight chefs on busy nights.

The original South Jersey location opened in 1974 and has garnered a dedicated following ever since. The restaurant was a James Beard Award semifinalist twice and was featured on The Inquirer’s 76, a list of the region’s most influential restaurants, in 2024.

Reporter Michael Klein has the story.
