University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia police are looking for a man who stabbed a Penn Dental School graduate student on campus yesterday morning, Penn spokeswoman Jeanne Leong said.

The student was assaulted by an unknown man at 36th and Sansom streets at 8:58 a.m., according to Penn officials and the Penn division of public safety Web site. The attack was unprovoked, according to the site.

The student was admitted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with minor injuries, the university said.

Police have deployed an "increased police presence" to find the assailant, according to a statement by the university.

About an hour after the attack, Penn issued a universitywide text-message and e-mail alert to students and faculty through its emergency-notification system, UPenn Alert.

This is the second time Penn has issued a text-message alert. The other was in December 2008, when two female students were sexually assaulted in their apartment at 44th and Spruce streets.

Penn was criticized for not alerting students and faculty after two people were injured in a shooting Jan. 15 at the Bridge Cinema, on Walnut Street near 40th, on the western edge of Penn's campus.
