Fatal officer-involved shooting being investigated in Cape May County

New Jersey officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Middle Township, Cape May County, that left a person dead Friday morning.
There was no ongoing threat to the public, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
The incident occurred in the Rio Grande section of Middle Township, and the area of Route 9 and Satt Boulevard was closed as the investigation progressed, the Middle Township Police Department said in a social media post. Authorities have asked residents and travelers to avoid the area.
The prosecutor’s office said no further details about the circumstances of the incident or people involved were immediately available. Prosecutors noted the scene had been secured, and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office was investigating the incident. Neither the office nor Middle Township police immediately responded to requests for comment.
New Jersey law requires the state Attorney General’s Office to conduct an investigation when a person dies during an encounter with law enforcement. The results of the investigation are to be presented to a grand jury, the prosecutor’s office said.
