A 4-year-old boy and four adults were shot Saturday night in South Philadelphia in an incident police originally reported as a quadruple shooting.

The shooting was reported around 7:50 p.m. in the 1700 block of Ringgold Street, police said. There officers found the 4-year-old boy shot in the abdomen, a 54-year-old woman shot in a leg and wrist, a 58-year-old woman shot in the legs, and a 30-year-old man shot in the wrist. A short time later, a 40-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen was brought by private auto to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where the other victims were treated.

The child was stabilized and transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he underwent surgery, police said.

The 40-year-old man was operated on at Penn Presbyterian and was reported in critical condition Sunday, police said. All other victims were reported in stable condition.

According to Inquirer data, more than 100 people under 18 have been shot so far this year in Philadelphia, 18 of whom have died. Including Saturday’s 4-year-old victim, 14 children age 12 and younger have been shot, six by accidental shootings, often by other children. The others have been stray bullets.

The identities of Saturday’s quintuple shooting victims and their relationship were not available.

No arrests were made and no weapons recovered, said police, who also had not determined a motive.

About five hours after that shooting, three people were shot around 1 a.m. Sunday on Franklin Place in North Philadelphia.

Police said a 31-year-old man was shot once in the back and once in a leg, a 25-year-old man was shot once in the abdomen, and a 22-year-old woman was shot once in a leg.

All were taken by private vehicles to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and were reported in stable condition, police said.

The motive remained unknown and no arrests were made.
