Preston & Steve kick off 2016 Camp Out for Hunger at Xfinity Live

Thanksgiving may be over, but over at WMMR, the folks at Preston & Steve are keeping the giving spirit going with their annual Camp Out for Hunger food drive and fundraiser.

Thanksgiving may be over, but the folks behind WMMR's Preston & Steve are keeping the giving spirit going with their annual Camp Out for Hunger food drive and fund-raiser.

The charity event, which runs Monday through Dec. 2 at Xfinity Live, is celebrating its 19th year.  It aims to collect food donations for local families in need for distribution via Philabundance. Last year's event garnered more than 580 tons of food donations, and $158,995 in monetary donations, according to Greater Media.

The group hopes to top that this year. Thanks to some early corporate donations that included 360,000 pounds of food from Acme, things are off to a great start.

"It used to be that Monday for the event was slow," said Steve Morrison, one half of Preston & Steve. "It would make us nervous about the rest of the week, but this year, we are pleasantly surprised."

But that doesn't mean the Camp Out crew — which includes Morrison, cohost Preston Elliot, executive producer Casey Foster, and anchor Kathy Romano, among others — is taking it easy. So far, confirmed guests for the week include comedian Jim Breuer, the Margera family (sans Jackass alum Bam), and Dropkick Murphys bassist and lead singer Ken Casey, who will perform live on Tuesday.

"I think as the week goes on, we gel more and more, as opposed to getting tired of each other," Morrison said. "We actually are sharing such a rare common experience that we collectively have this unwritten body language that we can read. There's not an Odd Couple dynamic going on."

Still, this year's Camp Out for Hunger faces some challenges — chiefly, scheduling. Between Eagles, Flyers, and Sixers games, the stadium complex in South Philly will host several major events this week. Foster worries the sporting events could impact donations due to potential parking and traffic issues.

However, the Camp Out crew is fighting back against parking anxieties with a texting service. For information about where to park to donate, fans can text "PARKING" to 39333, or check the guide online.

Donation hours are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday. On Friday, donation hours are 6 to 11 a.m. Only non-perishable items are accepted; Acme will have a pop-up store on site to assist with last-minute contributions.
