Steve Smith to IR

The Eagles have placed wide receiver Steve Smith (knee) on their Injured Reserve list and signed defensive tackle Cedric Thornton off the practice squad to take his place on the roster.

Smith did not dress Sunday for the first time this season because he had a bone bruise on his knee, the same one he had microfracture knee surgery on last December.

His season, and likely his tenure with the Eagles, are now over.

Aside from filling in for the benched DeSean Jackson last month against Arizona, Smith saw very little playing time with the Eagles. Signed as a free agent for around $2.3 million, Smith wasn't expected to contribute much coming off surgery. But he produced almost no game-changing moments when he did play.

In fact, Smith's more memorable moments were when he did something wrong, like when he had a pass bounce off his hands and into a Giants defender's back in September, or when he inexplicable fell short of the first down marker after catching a pass against the Cardinals.

In all, Smith played in nine games, caught 11 passes for 124 yards and scored one touchdown for the Eagles.

Thornton was an undrafted free agent that originally made the Eagles' 53-man roster before the season started. But he was briefly cut and then added to the practice squad.
