Robert Plant & Band of Joy at the Borgata

I was thinking that the best show I'd seen all year was Robert Plant & Band of Joy at the Tower in the land of the ice and snow - otherwise known as Upper Darby - in January.

I was thinking that the best show I'd seen all year was Robert Plant & Band of Joy at the Tower in the land of the ice and snow - otherwise known as Upper Darby - in January. (I wrote that up here and here.) But I'm reconsidering after seeing Plant and BOJ again on the last date of their American tour over the weekend in Atlantic City which Plant, bless his heart, described as "a beautiful seaside town.

Particularly rich was the version of Joe "Red" Hayes and Jack Rhodes' country standard  "Satisfied Mind," with Darryl Scott on lead vocals. Plant, classy guy that he is, settled into the background on harmony and harmonica as Scott drove home the song's anti-materialist creed - "The wealthiest person is a pauper at times / Compared to the man with a satisfied mind" - from within the belly of the beast.

Plant, of course, has plenty of cash of his own, but would have even more if he would sign on for that super-lucrative Led Zep reunion. Instead, he chose to sing "Rock & Roll," with his Wolverhampton Wanderers scarf tied around the mic stand as "the only Englishman playing with all these wonderful American musicians." Below, he satisfies himself with Buddy Miller, Scott, and Patty Griffin, among others. Underneath the pics, see Scott sing "Satisfied Mind" at a show in Asheville, N.C. earlier this year.
