HERSHEY, Pa. - Holy Ghost Prep won its second straight PIAA Class AA boys' soccer state championship, getting three unanswered goals and defeating Lancaster Mennonite, 3-1, at Hersheypark Stadium.
The Firebirds (19-4-1) went down a goal less than five minutes into the contest, but Holy Ghost roared back behind a great offensive effort.
Teddy Kawocwza leveled the game at one with 25 minutes left and created the chance that led to the go-ahead goal ten minutes after that. A throw in from Mike Kirby was flicked towards goal by Joe Braun, and Kawocwza headed it on net. The ball was surely going in, when a Lancaster Mennonite defender stuck his hand out to stop it.
The play resulted in a penalty kick and a red card, meaning the Firebirds played the rest of the game a man up.
Kirby drilled the penalty kick to put the Firebirds ahead, 2-1, and Braun added an insurance goal with 23 minutes left to play in the contest.
