A mother and her 4-year-old child had to jump out of the second-floor window of their burning house early Saturday in West Philadelphia, according to a Fire Department dispatcher and TV news reports.

The fire was reported a few minutes after midnight at the house on the 1400 block of North 61st Street.

The mother and her child suffered burns and bruises from the fall and were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital for treatment, where they were in stable condition, TV news stations reported.

The cause of the blaze, which was put under control in about 20 minutes, remains under investigation.

The fire followed a fatal blaze on Friday when 11-year-old Elliotte Jenkins Jr. was killed and his 39-year-old father injured in a 4 a.m. fire in their rowhouse on the 1200 block of Millick Street in West Philadelphia.

The father, who was alert and in stable condition, was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns to his hands and feet, the dispatcher said. A Penn Medicine spokesman on Saturday said the father has been discharged from the hospital.
