Black Friday shootings outside stores in South Jersey, Texas leave two dead
A 21-year-old man was killed and his older brother wounded early Friday in a hail of bullets in the parking lot outside the Macy's at the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing, officials said.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said the gunfire erupted about 1 a.m.
Desmond Cottman, of Atlantic City, was hit multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:23 a.m., the office said in a statement.
His 26-year-old brother, Shadi Cottman, of Clayton, suffered a leg wound and was taken to AlantiCare Regional Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition, the statement said.
The office did not provide any details about the shooting.
Photos from the scene showed multiple bullet shell evidence markers scattered around the parking lot, and around dawn a silver SUV with bullet holes in its body and windshield was towed from the scene.
The mall was closed at the time, but the Macy's was open, according to its Black Friday schedule
In Texas, police say a man trying to stop another man from beating a woman in a crowded San Antonio parking lot has been shot dead and a bystander has been critically wounded.
The shooting happened Friday afternoon outside a Wal-Mart store.
Police Chief William McManus says a man was assaulting a female companion when the other man drove up and demanded he stop. McManus says the attacker drew a handgun and fired at the man, killing him and critically wounding a female bystander.
A woman in the vehicle with the man who was shot was injured by shattered glass.
McManus says the beaten woman escaped and a police helicopter followed the shooter's vehicle for 10 miles before his arrest.
