These Philadelphia-area grocery stores might sell wine soon

Wine will soon be coming to some Pennsylvania grocery stores – but at which supermarkets will consumers be able to pick up a bottle?

No grocery or convenience stores in the state will automatically start selling wine once the bill, which Gov. Tom Wolf signed Wednesday, goes into effect, according to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

Only those that already sell beer under a restaurant license will be able to get an expanded wine license.

More than 300 such shops statewide are eligible to apply for those licenses, a step that the businesses will need to take if they want to sell wine in addition to beer.

Any establishment with a current restaurant liquor license can apply, board spokeswoman Elizabeth Brassell said. That includes grocery stores, which have gotten the most buzz in light of the new legislation, as well as bars and hotels that have that type of license.

Businesses with eating place retail licenses – the type many delis and corner stores have – are not eligible for the expanded wine licenses.
