Independent files to run for City Controller

A former assistant city treasurer for the city of Philadelphia has filed to run as an independent for City Controller.

Rob Bowers, a former assistant treasurer for the city of Philadelphia, on Tuesday became an independent candidate for City Controller in the Nov. 7 general election.

Bowers met Tuesday's deadline to file at least 4,075 signatures of registered city voters on nomination petitions.  He will face Democratic nominee, Rebecca Rhynhart, who upset City Controller Alan Butkovitz's bid for a fourth term by winning the May 16 primary election, and Republican nominee Michael Tomlinson.

Bowers, who lives in Point Breeze, said the 22 months he spent as assistant treasurer — at the end of former Mayor Michael Nutter's second term and the beginning of Mayor Kenney's administration — convinced him to seek public office. In his campaign literature, the former Democrat said he was "choosing to run to replace the status quo politics that still exists."
