A 35-year-old Center City woman was sexually assaulted and stabbed after she was awakened by a man who was on top of her early yesterday, police said.
The attack occurred about 4 a.m., said Lt. Thomas McDevitt of the Police Department's Special Victims Unit. The woman was alone and the man apparently entered through an unlocked door.
He "indecently assaulted" her but did not rape her, McDevitt said. He then stabbed her in the neck, a shoulder and an arm. She was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for treatment of her injuries, which were not life-threatening.
Earlier, at 1:30 a.m., a 32-year-old South Philadelphia woman was indecently assaulted by a man who appeared to have entered through an unlocked door, McDevitt said.
She was awake and alone when she found the man inside her house demanding money. He assaulted her, and during a struggle hit her on the head with a dumbbell. He then fled with the dumbbell.
"At this time, we don't believe the two assaults are connected," McDevitt said.
