The 25-year-old Temple University med student awoke to a violent nightmare early Saturday inside her Center City apartment.

Police said that at about 8 a.m. the woman opened her eyes to find a man on top of her with an electrical cord wrapped tightly around her neck.

"He demanded money and sex from her and told her he was going to kill her," said Sgt. Brian King, of the Special Victims Unit.

King said the attacker loosened the cord around the woman's neck long enough for her to give him $120.

The man snatched the woman's cell phone before fleeing her apartment at 13th and Spruce streets, King added.

The woman sustained injuries to her neck and jaw. She did not seek medical treatment, King said.

The assailant was described as an African-American man, 25 to 35 years old, 6-foot-2, muscular build, with a dark complexion. He was wearing an orange T-shirt, jeans and a do-rag.

"Right now, we aren't looking at this suspect for any other incidents," King said.
