Service on SEPTA's R6 commuter rail line was suspended in both directions for more than two hours this morning after a person crossing the tracks was fatally struck by a train.

The accident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. where the rails cross Schoolhouse Lane in the East Falls section of Philadelphia, a SEPTA spokesman said. Officials had few details about the fatality.

Service resumed in both directions about 8:30 a.m.

The accident occurred when an outbound train was about to pull into the Wissahickon station.

SEPTA officials did not know if the victim was a man or woman.

William Burk, 35, of North Philadelphia, said he was on the train on his way to work in Audubon, Pa., this morning about 6:15 when the victim was hit and the train rolled to a stop.

Burk said the conductors walked to the back of the train and then walked back, announcing to passengers that the train had struck someone.

He said all of the passengers on the train, which was half full, got out and walked to the Wissahickon station.

"It's a sad thing, that's a horrible death," said Burk.
