A pair of "urban terrorists" fired 11 bullets near an Upper Darby playground before sunset Saturday night, killing a teenager and endangering the lives of about 100 people in the area, local police said.
Only one of the 11 shots fired hit the the victim, Aaron Kearney, 19, on this densely populated block in front of the Second Ward playground, said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.
No one else was injured, he said.
Upper Darby officers were called to Greenwood and Crosley avenues at 6:47 p.m. and found Kearney, of Grant Road in Folcroft, Delaware County, lying unconscious in the street, Chitwood said.
Kearney had been struck one time in the chest, he said. The victim died while in transit to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
"Nobody saw nothing," Chitwood said, of the shooting spree. But detectives have canvassed the area and have developed "some good leads," he said.
Kearney and a friend argued with the shooter and his pal. The argument appears to have been drug-related, Chitwood said. After the shots were fired, the suspects fled from the scene.
Chitwood called the man who shot Kearney and his accomplice "urban terrorists" because they chose a comfortable evening when many people were out enjoying the weather to commit their crimes. *
