Accepting some blame for the accident, the girlfriend of a man killed by a hit-and-run driver on Kelly Drive appealed today for the motorist to surrender.
"Do the right thing, do the responsible thing, and come forward," said Kritsine Evans.
Her 47-year-old boyfriend Bradley Grogan of West Hartford, Conn., was struck on July 25 as the couple crossed the drive near Fairmount Avenue.
They had been celebrating Grogan's forthcoming 48th birthday at the Water Works Restaurant, and left to go to a friend's house at about 10:30 p.m., Capt. Mike Murphy, commander of the police Accident Investigtion Division, said at a news conference this morning.
As Grogan was crossing the road, he saw the oncoming vehicle - what Murphy described as a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee - and pushed his girlfriend of 14 years out of the way, before he was struck.
The driver got out of his car to check on Grogan, but appeared nervous and fled as police and medics arrived, said Evans, 48, of the Fairmount section.
Grogan was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he died the next day.
At the news conference, a tearful Evans said she and Grogan shared blame for the accident with the driver.
"We were in the wrong," she said. "We were crossing without a crosswalk."
According to police, the driver was a white man in his early 20s about 5-foot-5, with a muscular build, tan complexion, and short, dark hair.
Police are still seeking the driver, as well as two Good Samaritans - a pediatric nurse and doctor - who stopped to help.
"We need for these folks to get in touch with us," Murphy said.
Evans said that she felt sorry for the driver, but urged him to identify himself to police.
