The Free Library of Philadelphia has filled the long-vacant job of curator of the Edwin A. Fleisher Collection of Orchestral Music. Musicologist Gary Galván succeeds Kile Smith, who retired in September 2011 to compose full time.

Galván holds a doctorate from the University of Florida in musicology with interdisciplinary studies in digital media, and has been a researcher and digital projects coordinator at the Fleisher since 2006. He is at work on a biography of the collection's namesake entitled From Cradle to Grave: Edwin A. Fleisher and the Pan American Symphonic Coming of Age.With more than 22,000 titles, the Fleisher calls itself the world's largest lending library of orchestral performance materials. It loans parts and scores to performing groups, and though it generally will not accommodate requests from the general public, examples of its holdings are featured monthly on WRTI-FM's Discoveries From the Fleisher Collection. - Peter Dobrin
