A teenager was critically injured early Saturday in a two-vehicle accident on City Avenue near the Schuylkill Expressway on-ramp, Philadelphia police said.

The crash happened about 3:30 a.m. on the 3900 block of City Avenue in the River Park section of West Philadelphia.

A 29-year-old Philadelphia man, driving a 2015 Ford Fusion at high speed northbound, slammed into the back of a 2000 Honda Accord heading in the same direction, police said.

A 17-year-old boy who was sitting in the backseat of the Accord suffered severe head trauma and was taken to Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood. An 18-year-old male driving the Accord suffered abdominal pain and facial cuts and was also taken to Lankenau.

Three other passengers in the Accord - two 17-year-old boys and a 17-year-old girl - reported minor pain to their necks and backs and facial scratches, and were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, police said.

The crash remains under investigation. Charges had not been filed and no names were released.
