Suspected Philly gunman caught in Georgia

The man charged with the attempted murder of Daren Dieter is in custody, police announced today.

Dieter, 24, whose father, Lance Haver, is the city's consumer advocate, was shot and paralyzed from the neck down Sept. 22 as he sat with a friend in a car parked in a lot near the accused gunman's home.

The suspect, Tyree Bohannon, 21, of the 6500 block of North Fairhill Street in East Oak Lane, was arrested Wednesday on narcotics charges in Jonesboro, Ga., where he remains in jail, pending an extradiction hearing.

Dieter, an aspiring artist, was shot at point-blank range Sept. 22 in the parking lot of a bar. Police said that he and Bohannon may have had an argument before the shooting outside Shrimpie's Bar at 1910 Cheltenham Ave.

After he was shot in the neck and chest, Dieter was placed on life support to help him breathe. He remains paralyzed, police said.

Haver, who has lobbied legislators to strengthen gun laws, has remained steadfast in his campaign to reduce the availability of guns, stressing that others are as susceptible as his son as long as such weapons remain on the street.

The shooting was recorded by surveillance cameras, and police used a tape to get the public's help in identifying the gunman. On the surveillance tape, the gunman is seen going in and out of the bar, and talking with patrons and security guards.

Dieter and Elina Henry, whom he had been dating for about a month, had pulled into the lot about 11 p.m. She stayed in the car while Dieter went to Shrimpie's to order takeout at a walk-up window.

About 11:15 p.m., Dieter returned to the car and was about to pull out when the gunman approached the driver's side and opened fire.

Henry was treated at the hospital for a wound to the arm from one of the bullets that passed through Dieter.

Police tracked Bohannon's path to Baltimore and later to Georgia.. He is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, firearms violations and related offenses.

Court records show that Bohannon has been arrested three times in the last two years on numerous charges, including robbery, assault, firearms violations, receiving stolen property and providing false identification to police.

He has been convicted only of false identification and was placed in a program for first-time offenders after an arrest last November.
