Coast Guard probes tanker grounding in C&D Canal
A 600-foot oil tanker that ran aground in the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal 30 miles south of Philadelphia has been freed, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Nothing was spilled and no one was injured, but the tanker is anchored near Reedy Point while while the Coast Guard and environmental officials investigate the incident, said Petty Officer Christopher McLaughlin.
The Tuchkov Bridge, a Liberian-flagged tanker, was on its way to Baltimore from Philadelphia around 10 p.m. last night when it got stuck on some rocks near the St. Georges Bridge, McLaughlin said.
Around midnight, the tide rose and freed the tanker, he said.
The tanker is carrying 195,000 barrels of oil and has a crew of 21, he said.
