As New Jersey voters cast their ballots throughout the day, there are a few key races across the state The Inquirer will be monitoring.

There’s heightened national attention and anticipation swirling around the race between South Jersey Republican U.S. Jeff Van Drew and his challenger, Democratic Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock. However, the anticipated blue wave may have to be “a blue tsunami” to unseat Van Drew.

Farther north, some see the 7th Congressional District election between incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Kean Jr. and his Democratic opponent, Rebecca Bennett, as a critical seat for Democrats to flip if they want to win a majority in the House.

And then there’s longtime Democratic U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, who is expected to run for president in 2028, but not before his reelection bid against Republican Justin Murphy, the former deputy mayor of Tabernacle.

The Inquirer’s Susan K. Livio has the story.

Monday was a big day for 12-year-old Mateo Malcarney.

In one afternoon, he had a party with his friends and family, met a variety of animals including a python and a tortoise, and learned that his wish to go on an African safari trip was granted.

He and his family will be off on the adventure to South Africa this week.

The trip was made possible through the funding and organization of Make-A-Wish New Jersey and Subaru of Cherry Hill. Mateo is in remission from non-Hodgkin lymphoma and his health is nearly back to where it was before he was diagnosed in May 2025.

Reporter Lacey Latch has the reactions from Mateo and his parents.
