Weekend alert: Think twice about driving on I-76

Driving on the Schuylkill Expressway in the area of University Avenue/Grays Ferry Avenue Interchange (Exit 346B) in Philadelphia will be a challenge this weekend.

Driving on the Schuylkill Expressway in the area of University Avenue/Grays Ferry Avenue Interchange (Exit 346B) in Philadelphia will be a challenge this weekend.

PennDOT advises the highway, officially known as I-76, will be restricted to one lane in both directions between tonight and Monday morning because of construction work.

And this will be the first of three weekends the lane closures will be in effect.

The work involves the placement of a new concrete surface on the bridges carrying the expressway over the Schuylkill River, CSX railroad tracks, Grays Ferry Avenue and 34th Street.

During the next three weekends, I-76 East will be restricted to one lane from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, and I-76 West will be down to one lane from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, PennDOT says.
