NEWARK - Gov.-elect Christopher J. Christie today nominated Andrew Eristoff to be state treasurer, handing the former New York City councilman the massive task of restoring financial balance to New Jersey.
The new administration inherits a budget with an $8 billion to $10 billion deficit, a pension system sliding toward insolvency and crippling debt.
Christie said solutions would take time, but he intends to tackle all three problems and make the state more affordable.
Eristoff, 46, was New York State Tax Commissioner under Gov. George Pataki and was a former aide to New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
"His vision for what we need to do here in New Jersey matched with mine," Christie said.
Eristoff must be confirmed by the state Senate.
