Former senator Bryant loses pension

Former New Jersey Sen. Wayne Bryant, in prison for political corruption, will not receive his pension after officials voted today for full forfeiture.

Former New Jersey Sen. Wayne Bryant, in prison for political corruption, will not receive his pension after officials voted today for full forfeiture.

Bryant, serving a four-year sentence in a West Virginia federal prison, will lose credit for 27 years of service that would have allowed him to collect nearly $7,000 monthly, said Tom Vincz, spokesman for the New Jersey Treasury.

As required by law, trustees of the state's Public Employees Retirement System reviewed Bryant's application for retirement benefits and launched an investigation because Bryant had been convicted in November 2008 of political corruption.

Bryant, a Lawnside Democrat and chairman of the state Budget and Appropriations Committee, accepted a job at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey where he did little work while helping secure $11 million in state funding for the school.
