A 17-year-old boy was in extremely critical condition after being shot in the head Tuesday night in South Philadelphia, police said.

The shooting occurred about 9:15 p.m. inside a Chinese takeout at 27th and Dickinson Streets, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The victim was among about 10 young adults inside the store when the shooter tried to enter through the front door. The victim and others tried to hold the glass door closed and the shooter fired through the door. The victim was taken by police to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Small said police did not know whether the victim was the intended target. Two shell casings were found on the sidewalk in front of the door.

Police were checking surveillance video from inside and outside the store.
