A former Philadelphia man pleaded guilty yesterday to committing two South Jersey armed bank robberies that netted more than $24,000, authorities said.
Cordell Maurice Bines, 18, admitted robbing $13,120 from a Willingboro branch of the Farmers & Mechanics bank on April 6 with a revolver. Bines also admitted to robbing $11,170 from an Eastampton branch of the same bank on April 12 with an accomplice he knew only as "Little Guy." During both robberies, Bines vaulted the counter and punched or kicked a bank teller, said Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie.
Bines also admitted an attempted carjacking and a home invasion following the second stickup. He fired a shot into the car he was trying to steal, but failed to take it. Failing that, he forced his way into the home of a 59-year-old Eastampton woman, locked her in a closet, and took her vehicle, Drewniak said. He was captured by police after crashing it. Bines is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 14 by U.S. District Judge Renée Marie Bumb. - Sam Wood
