Firearms, grenades seized in Upper Darby home
Police seized scores of guns, 11 hand grenades, thousands of rounds of ammunition and other explosive devices from a home at 300 S. State Rd. in Upper Darby yesterday.
John Harvey, 41, owner of the house, and Robert Stansel, 64, who lives in the basement, were charged with possession of weapons of mass destruction, reckless endangering of other people, risking a castrophe and criminal conspiracy, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said last night.
Police also found cocaine in the house, and a "makeshift firing range in the basement," Chitwood said.
Township authorities initially went to the home after neighbors called in a report of a fire. A heater in the garage was malfunctioning, creating the smoke, Chitwood said. When authorities asked to get into the garage, which was filled with guns, they were refused, Chitwood said, so they got a search warrant.
When asked what was the intent and motivation of the two suspects for possessing the weapons, Chitwood replied, "who knows."
"Guns and beer," he said. "That's all we saw in the house."
