Two officers injured as cruiser hits mailbox
Two police officers responding to a call to assist colleagues were injured in South Philadelphia yesterday when their patrol car struck a mailbox, authorities said.
The officers, a narcotics lieutenant and a patrolman traveling in a marked cruiser, were not seriously injured in the accident at 20th Street and Snyder Avenue, said Sgt. Ray Evers, a department spokesman. The two men, whose names were not released because their families had not been notified, were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
They were traveling west on Snyder Avenue about 7:30 p.m. to back up other officers who were making two arrests in the 2300 block of Mountain Street, Evers said.
"Another car swerved in their direction, and they jumped the curb and hit the mailbox," he said. The patrol car sustained front-end damage.
