A 75-year-old Villanova woman was released on bail yesterday after she surrendered to police to face charges in a hit-and-run accident in Bryn Mawr on July 15.
Suzanne K. Lammers, of Hepburn Drive, appeared at the Police Administration Building in Ardmore shortly after noon with her attorney, Bruce Miller.
The arraignment was done by video camera; charges were lodged with District Judge Kathleen Valentine in a courtroom several blocks away.
Lammers is accused of causing an accident involving personal injury, a felony, and failure to stop and render assistance, a summary offense. The felony carries a minimum sentence of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
She was released after posting 10 percent of $50,000 cash bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday before Valentine, Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath said.
No one answered the phone at Lammers' home late yesterday afternoon. Miller did not return a call to his office. The victim's family did not return a call.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Andrew Mallee, 13, of Bryn Mawr, was struck as he rode his bicycle west on New Gulph Road near Morris. Initially hospitalized in critical condition, he is recovering at home.
He was hit by a woman driving a tan or gold Volvo station wagon, witnesses told police. An anonymous tipster pointed police to Lammers' 2002 Volvo, which had a big hole in the passenger-side window.
On Tuesday, detectives went to Lammers' home, the affidavit said, and were shown the vehicle. When asked to explain the damage, Lammers said she struck "something brown" on July 15 and thought it was a deer.
"Mrs. Lammers stated she continued to travel west in order to turn around, and when she heard sirens, she decided that she should go home, because she was not sure what happened," the affidavit said.
Detectives who ran forensic tests on Lammers' car said the damage matched the circumstances of the accident, the affidavit said. Tests were under way on samples taken from the vehicle.
