Phila. lawyer arrives in Vienna for envoy post

The new U.S. ambassador to Austria has arrived in Vienna and says he hopes to enhance the bonds of friendship between the two countries.

David Girard-diCarlo, a prominent Philadelphia lawyer and Republican fund-raiser, replaces Susan McCaw, who left the post early.

Girard-diCarlo, the former chairman of the Blank Rome law firm, said upon arrival at Vienna's airport yesterday that the United States is a solid friend of Austria's and that he is looking forward to an exchange of views on issues of mutual interest. He was a top fund-raiser for President Bush in the 2000 and 2004 elections and also served as a fund-raiser for Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign.

Girard-diCarlo will officially become ambassador once he presents his credentials to President Heinz Fischer.
