Eagles backup Young downplays 'dream team' comment

VINCE YOUNG said the "dream team" comment he made late last month after signing with the Eagles was taken out of context. What he probably meant to say was it was blown out of proportion, but that's neither here nor there.

More significantly, the quarterback has no regrets about saying it, even if every team on the Eagles' schedule is going to use it as bulletin board material this season.

"Basically, what I meant is we really do have a talented bunch of guys," Young said. "And I really feel if we continue to keep working and take care of our responsibilities and finish like we want to finish as a team, we can be where we want to be at.

"That's how the Miami Heat was. Those guys ended up there in the NBA Finals. It's all about getting your chemistry right and playing together and taking steps to be where you want to be at."

Yeah, he did just refer to the Miami Heat.

While his "dream team" comment has gotten a lot of national attention, Young said none of his teammates or coaches have brought it up.

"Nobody around here has really been talking about it," he said. "It's been mostly outside of this locker room you hear it. In this locker room, we're just trying to be focused on getting better every day."

Since signing a 1-year deal with the Eagles late last month, Young has been focused on trying to learn a strange new offense as quickly as possible.

"I'm just trying to learn the terminology, trying to get on the same page as everyone else," said Young. "I'm a 6-year guy. Some of the concepts we run here we ran in Nashville [with the Titans]. It's just a matter of getting the terminology down and let it flow when you're in the huddle and putting guys where they need to be at in protection and things like that. That's the biggest key right now."

Young, who started 47 games for the Titans, was brought in to back up starter Michael Vick. But he's getting pushed by second-year man Mike Kafka. Kafka doesn't have Young's arm strength, but has an impressive .711 completion percentage and 99.9 passer rating in the Eagles' first two preseason games. Young has a .615 completion percentage and 46.6 rating.

"We push each other to be the best," Young said. "Competition is great. I'm just trying to go out and take care of my responsibility. All I can worry about is what I need to do as a quarterback. "
