CLEARWATER--Jayson Werth's three-run home run proved to be enough to power the Phillies over the visiting Yankees at Bright House Field, 6-2.
The Phillies beat up on Yankees reliever Damaso Marte - literally - after he replaced starter Andy Pettitte, who gave up two earned runs in his first four innings of the exhibition season.
After back-to-back singles to lead off the fifth by Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino, Werth crushed a Marte slider into the left field berm for his second homer of the spring. Ryan Howard followed Werth's blast with a line drive that hit Marte square in the back and forced him to leave the game.
Rollins and Howard finished with two hits apiece for the Phils.
Phillies starter Joe Blanton picked up his second win of the spring after scattering seven hits and two earned runs over five innings. Jose Contreras, Sergio Escalona and Chad Durbin pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the Phillies (8-4).
Catcher Francisco Cervelli went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Yankees.
A Phillies spring training record 10,640 people came out to celebrate St. Patrick's Day at the ballpark. The capacity crowd was treated to some bonus baseball after the Phillies came up to bat in the bottom of the ninth, despite having the lead.
Howard also gave the fans an extra show. He took additional batting practice immediately following the game.
The Phillies will play the Orioles in Sarasota on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
