House of the week: A three-bedroom brick Colonial in Drexel Hill for $289,977

Easy access to Philadelphia, as well as the architecture in the area, drew these owners to Drexel Hill.

Beth and Art Thompson do not have the fondest memories of their move back to the Philadelphia area in 2017 after 21 years in the South.

“It was a fun interstate move,” Art says ironically. Their Georgia house sold instantly, and he had “no place to move, no house, and no job.”

“The move included a caravan of three cars, one driven by our teenage daughter, and two dogs and two noisy cats,” Beth says. “I immediately felt welcomed to the area as our neighbor Jameel stopped in to say hi the day we were unpacking.”

It ended well, though, with a Colonial in Drexel Hill in the Aronimink Elementary School catchment area for the youngest of their three children.

The couple had wanted easy access to Philadelphia while living in the suburbs, says Art, a drummer and private music teacher. Beth, a registered nurse, says, “We fell in love with it on the website. And I love the architecture in this area.”

But now they have decided to move to the Poconos, where both grew up.

The Drexel Hill house, built in 1940 and well-maintained by previous owners who lived there for decades, has a columned front porch and tiger oak flooring on the first floor.

The living room has an electric fireplace, and there is a wine bar next to the staircase. The dining room is left of the center hall.

A great room addition with a cathedral ceiling and skylight is a step down from the living room.

The kitchen has been upgraded with stainless steel appliances, a side-by-side refrigerator with ice maker, granite countertops, and white cabinetry. The powder room is off the kitchen.

The kitchen opens to a deck with electric latticework underneath.

The bedrooms, all with ceiling fans, are on the second floor, and there is a washer/dryer in the primary bedroom. Another bedroom has steps leading to the attic.

The lower level is partially finished and now serves as Art’s music room but could also be used as an office, gym or playroom.

The private driveway runs along the side of the house, and the two-car garage could also be used for storage space or as a workshop.

Total square footage is 1,968.

The house is listed by Maureen Ingelsby of Keller Williams Media for $289,977.
