For his third Brick & Brew bar-restaurant in the western suburbs, Tom Kane has converted an old office building in Malvern, removing the drop ceilings to expose steel beams and stripping off drywall to show bricks and create a vast space adorned with moss and greenery and old whiskey barrels.

Kane even made up a backstory to explain his flight of whimsy: The building had been a distillery that was abandoned and left to rot. It suffered damage during a windstorm, hence the whiskey barrels you see up amid the beams.

The bar, which includes 14 taps, is tucked behind a three-quarter-high wall.

The Malvern location (400 E. King St.), with 150 seats inside and 70 outside, is double the size of the Media Brick & Brew. (A second location is in Havertown and will be moving nearby.) The three restaurants, under chef John DaSilva, share a menu, though each location’s weekly special differs.

Hours are 11:30 a.m. daily. The bar stays open till late; food is on till 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9 p.m. Sunday.
