Poll: New Jerseyans say it's honorable to serve
New Jersey may have a reputation for political corruption, but its citizens believe that it's honorable to be involved with government.
The Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll finds that 55 percent of the state's residents think getting involved in politics is noble. That compares with just under one-third who think it's "dirty business."
There are gender difference. Three-fifths of women see government as honorable; less than half of men do.
Residents themselves want to get more involved. Nearly two-thirds feel it's important to be active in their communities. However, only 15 percent say they're very interested in joining boards or commissions in their own town governments. The poll relied on phone surveys of 808 randomly selected New Jersey adults from Sept. 11 to 14. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
