Police in Newark, Del., are investigating the early Friday mugging of three University of Delaware students on Haines Street.

After the students left a party around 1:15 a.m., a gunman and three women confronted them, according to a statement from the university.

The gunman demanded money from a male student, the statement said.

One female student was thrown on the ground and "stomped on her back" by two of the women until she gave up her purse, officials said. Another female student was choked by the third woman and thrown to the ground before her purse was taken.

The assailants, described as 17 to 20 years old, fled in a car. One woman was described as heavyset, with an arm-length tattoo. None of the victims needed medical care.

Newark police were not available for comment.
