Will Cummings has impressive debut

TOLEDO, Ohio – Will Cummings provided a glimpse of what he's capable of.

And while he needs a little polishing, the freshman point guard should have a promising future at Temple.

Cummings started in place of Khalif Wyatt in Wednesday's 77-58 victory over Toledo at Savage Arena. Wyatt was benched due to showing up a couple of minutes late for Tuesday's film-study session.

In what was his first action at Temple, Cummings finished with six points, five rebounds and an assist in 21 minutes. Showing inexperience, he did, however, have four turnovers.

"I was really impressed with Will to be honest with you," Temple reserve guard Aaron Brown said. "He didn't play any games [before Wednesday]. His first three went in. So I know he had his juices flowing."

Cummings will remember his first shot attempt as an Owl for a long time.

The Florida native's three-pointer banked off the backboard with 15 minutes, 39 seconds left in the first half. The awkward looking shot attempt gave Temple a 12-4 advantage.

"Obviously, his first jumper that almost knocked the backboard down when it went in the basket was nice," Owls coach Fran Dunphy said. "Then he made his second [three-pointer]. It looked like he knew exactly what he wanted to do."

Cumming went on to make 2 of 3 three-point attempts.

"I thought he did as good a job as we could expect from him in his first college basketball game," Dunphy said. "Certainly starting, I thought it was easier. I knew I wanted to get him in there. And I thought it was easier for him to start rather than come off the bench."

Cummings, however, was just elated to contribute to a victory.

"It's just being competitive," he said. "I want to be on the court and help the team and help the team make plays. That's always the main thing."
