Kevin Comer nearly gave up and went to bed.
Tuesday would be another day.
But then the telephone rang in his house. Suddenly, the Seneca right-hander was a first-round draft pick by the Toronto Blue Jays.
"Big weight off my shoulders," Comer said.
Comer was selected with the 57th pick in the "sandwich" round of compensation picks between the first and second round. Technically, it's still regarded as the first round.
Only the first round and "sandwich" round were held Monday night. The "sandwich" round ended after the 60th pick, so Comer thought he might not get drafted until Tuesday.
"It was a long wait," said Comer, who watched the draft on MLB Network with family and friends.
Comer is 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA this season. He is expected to start for Seneca in the Group 3 state semifinals Tuesday against Middletown South at Rutgers.
