Phil Anastasia: Cherry Hill's Voiro drafted by Padres
Cherry Hill West graduate Vince Voiro, a right-handed pitchers who just finished his junior year at Penn, was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 47th Round (1,433 overall) of the major-league baseball draft Wednesday.
"It has always been a dream of mine to be drafted," Voiro said in a release issued by Penn. "I hasn't really thought too much about it coming true until after last summer, and it has been a crazy ride since then. There is still a lot of work to be done, so hopefully this is just the start of the journey."
The 6-4 Voiro struck out a career-high 57 hitters during the 2011 season while allowing just 24 walks. He threw five complete games.
In his best performance, Voiro tossed a complete-game shutout at Norfolk State, striking out ten batters and not allowing a walk over the seven innings.
